  • 11% on operating costs 
  • 10.3% on marketing costs  
  • 9% on online costs 
  • 31.6% on product costs

Now, this doesn't mean that you have to spend $40,000 to open your online store. The amount spent in the first year was very different depending on the industry, the type of ecommerce business, and whether or not it was a full-time job.  Also, you don't have to have $40,000 in cash on hand to start an ecommerce business. Many entrepreneurs (66%) use their own savings to fund their business. (Respondents could choose more than one source of funding.) They also got money from family and friends (23%) and took out personal loans (21%).
