How to Offer Gift Wrapping in E-commerce?

According to the 2014 MICROS Multi-channel Retail Delivery Report, 36 of the 240 stores were tested for gift wrapping. Many of these stores wrapped gifts for free. That's not even a quarter.   Sure, this number can't be 100% because gift wrapping isn't needed in all areas of e-commerce. For example, stores that sell spare car parts or pet food don't need to offer this service. Instead, they can use something like reward points for shopping in their Shopify 2 stores to keep customers coming back. Why would you need to wrap a gift?

  Customers can save time by having gifts wrapped for them. Your customers don't have to buy wrapping paper, cards, and gift boxes on their own. This feature is very helpful around the holidays when you need to buy and wrap gifts for family, friends, and coworkers, which can take a lot of time.  

What can scare away your customers?

  Here are some reasons why customers might not want to use gift wrapping:
  • They are worried that the order will come with a broken or faulty item or even the wrong item;
  • They don't know what the gift will look like or are worried that the wrapping won't look good or like the pictures;
  • Because there aren't enough choices or because they don't like how the gift is wrapped;
  • They don't want to spend money on wrapping gifts or think it costs too much.
Now that we know these reasons, we know how to work it so that customers won't be turned off by your store's gift wrapping. Let's look at what big brands do.

Nordstrom

At checkout, Nordstrom has a popup with options for gift wrapping. As we can see, there are three choices, and each one is talked about.

You'll notice that they didn't put all the pictures on the same popup. Instead, you can open the picture by clicking on the option you want. On the same page where you can choose samples, L'Occitane lets you choose a gift. Things to think about

  Now, to answer any questions a customer might have and to summarize what the above brands have done, here's a list of things you should think about when adding a gift-wrapping option to your website.  

1. Pictures

Include nice pictures of the different ways you can wrap gifts. You need to show your customers what the gift will look like.  

2. Reviews

Having reviews for your wrapping kits or options is a good thing, and it works the same way reviews for regular products do.  

3. Detailed description and explanation

Describe what each option includes. Also, say which items can't be wrapped or how you will wrap items that are too big or too small. Check out Kohl's nailed-it page. If you do things this way, your customer service.  

4. Variety of choice

Make sure you have at least two or three options with different prices or looks. These could be for men, women, or everyone, and they could be simple and cheap or luxurious and more expensive. It's also a good idea to have holiday-themed package options.  

5. Change with time

You might want to switch up your packaging options like greeting card companies do every year.  

6. Gift card

This can also be a separate choice. Consider giving a hand-written card because it makes any gift feel warmer.  

7. Gift receipt

Make sure to explain how a gift receipt works if you give one.  

8. From/to fields for messages

Make sure your message form has these fields so the recipient doesn't get confused and knows who sent them a gift.  

9. Quality of service

Of course, you need to make sure you give the customer exactly what they want, that the wrapping is in good shape, and that there are no mistakes with the greeting cards. When a client is upset about a failed gift, it's much worse for your business than when something goes wrong with a regular order. Set up your gift-wrapping service so that you could have chosen and wrap the gift for the person you care about most.  

10. Offer a 'remove price tag' option

This can be used to wrap a gift or by itself. If the customer doesn't want the recipient to see the price, they can hide it.
