When you Don’t Know What to Do, Here are 100+ Store Updates to Try

Are you short on things to do and out of ideas for how to update your online store? This is all you need to know. Here, we'll talk about more than 100 ways to update your eCommerce store when you don't have anything else to do.  Let's dive in!

Changes You Can Make to Your Online Store

1. CHANGE YOUR POPUP TEXT

Popups are a great way to increase sales and get new leads, but have you thought about changing the message in your popups? People who visit your website often will definitely look twice at a popup they haven't seen before. And who knows? A new message might help you get more people to sign up.

2. UPDATE YOUR PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS

Do the descriptions of your products speak directly to the people you want to buy them from? If they aren't, fixing them can help your products or services stand out in the minds of your audience. Or, to improve your SEO, you could add more high-performing keywords to your product descriptions.

3. ADD RATINGS & REVIEWS TO YOUR PRODUCT PAGES

Positive reviews are the best way to sell a product, so if customers have said nice things about it, be sure to put it on the product page.

4. SELL ON OTHER MARKETPLACES

Multi-channel selling is the way of the future, so if you haven't already, put your best-selling items on other sales platforms to boost sales. If you don't know where to start, a Facebook Shop or an Instagram Shop are both great places to start.

5. UPDATE YOUR ABOUT PAGE

It's not unusual for a website's About page to not be updated for months or even years, even though it's often one of the most-visited pages on almost any website! So, if you have a little extra time and haven't updated your "About" page in a while, why not?

6. ADD VIDEO CONTENT TO YOUR ABOUT PAGE

Video media is very popular because it connects with people in ways that written words just can't. You can talk directly to customers and show them who you are. This helps people understand who you are and what your brand stands for.

7. UPDATE YOUR HOMEPAGE

People usually look at your homepage first when they visit your site, so it's important to keep it fresh by changing the content, copy, images and calls to action. Make some changes, change the order of the different sections, move what's above the fold around, and make it easier for your visitors to get around and a better way to get people to buy from your store.

8. UPDATE YOUR SHIPPING & RETURNS PAGE

Have your shipping or return policies changed? If not, can you make them clearer and easier for your customers to understand? Go to your shipping and returns page if you want to change anything about the way it looks or what it says.  Don't know what to put on your page about shipping and returns? You can get some ideas from this Shipping Policy Template and this Returns and Refunds Policy Generator.

9. UPDATE YOUR META DESCRIPTIONS

When you first launched your site, did you write your meta descriptions in a hurry? Have you put meta descriptions on all of your pages? Are all of them made for SEO? Check your meta descriptions and add any that are missing to improve your site's SEO and get more people to click on it.

10. OPTIMIZE IMAGES FOR PAGE SPEED

If your site is a little slow, it could be causing people to leave, which would make your bounce rate go up. Use tools like ImageOptim and ShortPixel to improve your site's performance by optimizing your images. Check out this post for detailed instructions on how to optimize your website's images, and this post for more ways to lower your site's bounce rate.

11. TEST YOUR CHECKOUT PROCESS

Place a test order on your site to make sure everything works and looks the way you want it to so that customers have the best experience from start to finish.

12. SEND A WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER

A weekly email newsletter is a good way to keep your loyal customers up to date. Tell them about the latest news in their industry, new products, company announcements, or anything else that might interest them. Email lists make it easy to stay in touch with your best customers, so it's good for your business to keep a newsletter going.

13. ADD A WEBSITE NEWSFEED (USING BEAMER)

You can add a newsfeed to your site with a tool like Beamer, where you can share the big news, new products, special deals, and other exciting updates. It's a good way to get people interested and keep their attention on what you want to stand out.

14. CREATE PRODUCT UPSELLS & CROSS-SELLS

Upselling and cross-selling are two of the best ways to increase the average order value on your website and make more money overall. Find ways to use this power on your site if you aren't already doing so. Adding upsell or cross-sell options to product pages, during the checkout process, or even in order confirmation emails is just one way to do this. With a little bit of work, this can help your store's sales a lot.

15. INSTALL YOUR FACEBOOK PIXEL

Do you run paid ads on Facebook? If so, you must put your Facebook Pixel on your store so you can track how well your ads are doing and learn more about your customers. With this information, you'll be better able to tweak your ads to get the most conversions.  Use the Facebook Retargeting Ads: A Step-by-Step Guide and Scaling Facebook & Instagram Ads by Retargeting Someone Else's Website articles to get the most out of your Facebook Pixel.

16. INTEGRATE GOOGLE ANALYTICS

Every eCommerce store needs Google Analytics. It makes it easy to track your traffic and conversions and gives you useful information about how people use your site. Also, if you ever want to sell your website or get money for your business, potential buyers or investors will want to look at the data on your site.
Note: Your business needs more than just Google Analytics. It also needs other important tools and ways to run. Our 52-Week Marketing Plan goes over all of this and much more, so you can learn more about what they are and how to use them.

17. CREATE PRODUCT BUNDLES

Putting together bundles of products that go well together is a great way to boost sales since everyone loves a good deal. Is there a way to group some of your products together?

18. ADD FAQ SECTIONS TO YOUR PRODUCT PAGES

FAQs not only help answer customer questions, but they can also improve your SEO (if you optimize them for targeted keywords) and reduce the time you spend on customer support. Check your FAQ page to see if it answers all the questions your visitors are asking. If it doesn't, add them to your Contact page, Help page, or a separate FAQ page.

19. CREATE FREE SHIPPING OFFERS

Free shipping is a great way to get people to your website and make more sales, whether it's for a holiday or just to treat your customers. Check out this article to learn how to give your customers free shipping.

20. ADD A BANNER TO YOUR HOMEPAGE

If you only work on one page, make it your homepage. A banner at the top of the page is helpful for both you and your visitors. Use it to let people know about new products, important shipping information, seasonal sales, etc., so they don't miss important information that could lead them to buy something. This post will show you how to add an announcement bar to your website using code.

21. UPDATE YOUR THANK YOU PAGE COPY

It's very important to say "thank you," but a generic "thank you for ordering" page isn't very memorable. So, why not make changes to your copy to make it more interesting? Use this as a chance to get to know your customers better and build your relationship with them.

22. CREATE A FUN 404 “OOPS” PAGE

Is there anything worse than getting a 404 error page? Make your fun so that if customers end up there by accident, you can at least make them laugh. Also, don't forget to add links to your homepage, pages with your products, and a "Contact" page so that visitors can easily go back to another page on your site.

23. ADD SOCIAL PROOF NOTIFICATIONS

You can add social proof notifications to your site with the help of ProveSource, which is a useful tool. What is a notification of social proof? If someone buys a product from your website, a little popup will let your other visitors know. This makes people feel like they need to act quickly, which can help increase sales. It's like making an online version of a busy store.

24. ADD PRODUCT UNBOXING VIDEOS TO YOUR PRODUCT PAGES

Product unboxing videos are a great way to build trust and credibility with your audience and make customers feel good about your business. Plus, it's a fun way for potential customers to see how the product works and imagine what it would be like to open the box.  The better your product pages are, the more information you can give about your products. Imagine how many words a video is worth if a picture is worth a thousand words.

25. ADD PRODUCT REVIEW VIDEOS TO YOUR PRODUCT PAGES

What's better than a good review from a customer? This review is in video form! Authentic and relatable video reviews on your product pages can do a lot to boost sales, so if you have brand evangelists who love your products, ask them to record a short video explaining why. Don't forget to give them something in return, like free stuff, a discount code, a shout-out on social media, or money.

26. ADD PRODUCT ASSEMBLY VIDEOS TO YOUR FAQS

If you sell products that need to be put together in any way, put a video of how to do that on your FAQ or Help page. Not only will it help your customers, but it will also cut down on the number of times you have to help them. Plus, it makes people stay on your site longer, which is good for SEO.

27. ADD A BLOG

Content is one of the most important ways to get people to visit your site and keep them there. If you don't already have a blog, start one! You don't have to post new content on your blog all the time. As long as you keep a somewhat consistent schedule and focus on quality over quantity, you can see results. Our article "Content Strategy: The Ultimate Guide to Preparation, Production, Publication, and Promotion" has a lot of useful information on how to run a blog.

28. REPURPOSE YOUR BEST BLOG POSTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA & MEDIUM

Have a blog that's already up and running? Use your best content in different ways on social media and share it on sites like Medium. This is a very easy and effective way to bring the content back into the spotlight and get it seen by a new audience. Don't let good content get lost; use it to its fullest!

29. UPDATE YOUR TRANSACTIONAL/SHIPPING EMAILS

Emails that you have to send, like confirmations of purchases and orders being shipped, don't have to be boring. Make your copy fun! You might have just started your business and used generic templates for these emails. If that's the case, go back and change the content so it fits your brand better.

30. SET UP & LAUNCH AN AUTOMATED ABANDONED CART EMAIL CAMPAIGN

All of us have been there. We've put things in our shopping carts and then either forgotten to pay or had a moment of self-control and stopped shopping altogether. This is where email campaigns for carts that have been left empty come in to save the day (for eCommerce stores). They are a great way to get customers to go back to their carts and finish the checkout process again, which means more sales and more money for you.  This is one of those easy things for your online store that you can set up and forget about. It will run in the background and bring in sales without you having to do anything.

31. UPDATE YOUR SHIPPING PROVIDER/ SHIPPING PROCESS

There's always room for improvement, so why not look around for a better shipping deal if you've been with the same company for a while or just picked one when you started out without looking at other options? Or, if you're loyal to your provider, you might want to talk to them about getting a better deal or a faster shipping method.

32. ASK SOMEONE TO TEST YOUR WEBSITE’S NAVIGATION

You can test your own website to make sure it's easy to use, but if you've been looking at it for hours, you might miss some problems. Having a new set of eyes look at things can really help you figure out what needs to be fixed so you can give your audience a better online experience.

33. CREATE AN ONLINE COURSE

Making and selling online courses is a great way to keep customers interested, bring in new revenue streams, and establish yourself as an expert in your field. If your website doesn't already have an online course, why not make one?

34. PLAN YOUR CONTENT CALENDAR

We've already talked about how important blogging is for any website. It brings in and keeps an audience, helps your SEO, and gives your online brand a personality. Why not get ahead of the game and plan out what you're going to write about on your blog? Your future self will appreciate it. Check out our article on Content Strategy to learn how to plan your content.

35. GET A PRIVATE BUSINESS PHONE NUMBER

Having a contact number makes your business look more professional, and you can get one easily without having to set up another phone or landline. Instead, you can download an app like OpenPhone and, for a low monthly fee, choose any phone number you want.

36. GET A BUSINESS MAILBOX

Getting a P.O. Box is similar to getting a business phone number. It helps you look professional and receive work-related letters and packages without giving out your home address online. You can set up a business mailing and forwarding address with a service like Anytime Mailbox. If you give them permission, they can even open and scan your letters so you don't have to keep going to their office to get your mail. 37. GET A VPN At this point, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is pretty much a must-have for internet security, so if you don't already have one, it's time to get one. In our article on "How to Bulletproof Your Online Business," we talked about why it's so important to have a VPN. In short, it keeps hackers from getting into your devices and can help you get around firewalls that block your location. It's also easy to use. Install a VPN, like NordVPN, on your devices, and you'll have a secure connection to the internet. Easy, right? 38. ADD 2FA TO IMPORTANT ACCOUNTS You should also use 2-factor authentication (2FA) as a standard safety measure. It's easy to set up and a good way to protect your computer from hackers. How? In addition to the username and password, anyone trying to sign into one of your accounts must also provide a numerical code. This code changes every 30 seconds or so, making it harder for bots and other unauthorized people to get to your data.  Most of the accounts you use, like your email account, bank account, Facebook account, Instagram account, etc., have a dashboard where you can turn on 2FA security. You can then use a tool like Authy to generate 2FA codes to unlock each account.   Note: If you use an email service that has 2FA, you should definitely turn it on for your email (Google Gmail and Microsoft Outlook both have this feature).  Why?  Consider this: If you use a Gmail email address for most of your online accounts, and a hacker got your email login information, they could go to other sites (like Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and use the password reset feature to get into all of your other accounts, since they already have access to your sign-up email account. That's a pretty scary thought, so we suggest at least setting up two-factor authentication for your email account.

46. OFFER EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT CODES AS A LEAD MAGNET

To get more people to sign up for your email list, give them a reason to do so. A discount code can do a lot to get people to sign up for your email list. This can lead to more sign-ups and maybe even more sales as people use the discount code, which can be great for your brand.

76. CREATE A TWITTER STORY

Twitter now has a feature called "Fleets" that works like Instagram's "Stories," so use them the same way your brand would use Instagram Stories! Since many people are still using them, you have fewer people to compete with, and your content will be at the top of your followers' newsfeeds, making them more likely to see it.

77. PUBLISH A FACEBOOK STORY

Again, people respond well to likable live videos and interactive stories, so making a Facebook Story is another good way to interact with your followers and get your content seen by more people.

84. FOLLOW YOUR COMPETITORS’ FOLLOWERS

Your competitors probably want to reach the same people you do, so following their followers is a smart way to make your brand easier for your target market to find.

85. POST TO REDDIT FOR WEBSITE FEEDBACK

Want to know what people really think about your website? Reddit is the place to go to find honest opinions. Find the right subreddits to ask for feedback, though, because it won't be accepted everywhere.

86. CREATE A REDDIT SUBREDDIT

By making your own subreddit, you can build your own community of people who love your brand. It can also be a place to connect with your audience and get to know them better.

87. USE TWITTER ADVANCED SEARCH TO REACH OUT TO YOUR AUDIENCE
